Framingham,
Massachusetts-based Ameresco Inc. is slated to construct a natural gas plant
that will help the huge South Philly business campus manage its energy needs.
The
Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. announced Monday Ameresco will design
and build the multi-million dollar facility, as well as handle its long-term
operations and maintenance.
“The new natural gas plant is in line with the
Navy Yard’s passion and commitment to smart energy innovation and
sustainability, and will help support the energy demand for the 1,200-acre
urban business campus,” Prema Gupta, of PIDC, said in a statement.
“Ameresco will design and develop a project that not only addresses the Navy
Yard’s energy growth needs, reliability requirements, and cost targets, but can
also provide back-up and resiliency support as required.”
The
project, part of the Navy Yard's future microgrid, is estimated to cost $11
million, according to Philly.com.
A microgrid offers electricity independent of the regional grid, meaning it can
keep the lights on during power outages.
