Temple University is moving forward on a $170
million new library that will be the largest construction project in the
history of the school.
A ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Tuesday to mark the occasion.
Snøhetta is lead architect of the
215,000-square-foot library. Philadelphia’s Civic Design Review
Committee called the design “sophisticated poetry.”
Books won’t be the only focal point of the university’s
new library. The facility’s design “is inspired by the historic academies of Greek
antiquity, where social spaces for exchanging ideas were primary and storage of
written content took a secondary role,” the firm has said.
The new library will be located in the heart of
the Temple’s North Philadelphia campus and aims to be a conducive location for
learning and gathering. It will replace Barton Hall and be located at Liacouras
Walk, Polett Walk, Norris Street and 13th Street.
The project should be completed by fall 2018.
