Speculation is intensifying as Amazon.com
Inc. decides where to build its second headquarters — a $5 billion
project with as many as 50,000 jobs expected to come with it.
Time to add another voice to the mix, now that Inc. has ranked the six cities most likely to land HQ2. Philadelphia made the list – at No. 4.
The
entrepreneur-focused publication relied on sources like betting
websites and interviews with shipping experts, investors and people
familiar with Amazon.
Atlanta was
crowned the most likely winner because of its network of technical
talent, comparatively low cost of living, available real estate and
other factors. Chicago came in second because of its central location
and network of existing businesses.
But Philadelphia comes in just behind third-place Austin.
"In a report released in October, Moody's Analytics
ranked the City of Brotherly Love as the third-most ideal location for
Amazon, coming up just behind Austin and Atlanta, while NYU's Ginsberg
suggests that Philadelphia is the city that most often appears across
these varied analyses," Inc. noted
The magazine also noted Philadelphia's huge university community, especially University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University.
Interestingly, Inc. ranked Boston and Washington, D.C., behind Philadelphia
Other lists have been more pessimistic about Philadelphia's prospects. A Wall Street Journal analysis found that Dallas was likely to land HQ2 and did not even put Philadelphia on the short list. And a study by real estate firm Reis Inc. ranked Philadelphia 12th.
Amazon has said it will announce the HQ2 site in 2018 and speculation has swirled about when its shortlist of finalists will be crafted.
