Efforts to upgrade the Philadelphia International Airport received a $10
million boost Wednesday.
The Department of Transportation awarded PHL a grant of
nearly $10.8 million dedicated to the airport's runway extension project and
improving portions of the taxiway, according to U.S. Sen. Bob Casey's office.
“I’m pleased to see the Department of Transportation
investing in Pennsylvania’s infrastructure,” the senator said in a statement.
“Philadelphia International Airport is an integral part of the community and
this grant will assist in making it a safer, more efficient operation.”
The ongoing project will add a 1,494 linear-foot
extension to Runway 9R-27L. The extension, combined with associated taxiway
rehabilitation work, has a price tag of about $193 million.
The airport received funding earmarked for this
particular work in the past, including $800,000 from the state
earlier this year.
Airport CEO Chellie Cameron previously told the
Business Journal infrastructure investment is essential for PHL to realize its
full potential.
"If we don't address the needs in our terminals, as
well as some of the critical pieces of infrastructure on our airfield, our
airport will not be able to fully recognize its potential," she said in
May.
Aside from the runway extension project, other
infrastructure improvements at PHL are underway thanks in part to a nearly $900 million investment
led by American Airlines, which has a hub in Philadelphia.
