Philadelphia, PA, December 19, 2016 . . . The joint
venture of Skanska USA Building and Shoemaker Construction Company will
complete renovations of The Gallery shopping mall in Center City Philadelphia.
Owned and operated by Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT) and
Macerich, The Gallery is the single largest retail repositioning project in the
Philadelphia region.
The work completed to date has included preliminary
renovations including interior demolition, completed earlier this year.
Spanning three city blocks, The Gallery renovation is a
key piece of PREIT and Macerich's revitalization of East Market Street. The
approximately 1,400,000 SF interior and exterior renovation includes selective
structural demolition; new structural and architectural construction;
modifications and additions to the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire
protection systems; replacement of all common area floor finishes, ceilings and
lighting, neutral columns and storefront bulkheads and related core and shell
work.
"Skanska's extensive building experience in the
Greater Philadelphia region, coupled with our global network, will all be
applied in transforming The Gallery into a thriving retail, entertainment and
dining hub-a centerpiece for the community," said Ed Szwarc, Executive
Vice President and General Manager of Skanska. "Together with Shoemaker,
we will deliver a world class destination for PREIT and Macerich that combines
the best of our firms’ expertise."
The renovation will also include a dramatic
transformation of the façade, sidewalks and streetscapes on Market Street,
11th, 10th, 9th and Filbert Streets which will include a new streamlined glass
entrance, a continuous row of street-level accessible shops and high tech
digital signage.
"In 1977, Shoemaker constructed Gallery I and since
that time we have been involved with numerous renovation projects at The
Gallery. The Skanska team constructed Gallery II in the mid-1980's so our
partnership is a natural fit to complete the next transformative renovation
project of this iconic structure for PREIT and Macerich,†said Maura Hesdon,
General Manager for Shoemaker Construction Co.
During the renovation, the project will include phased
construction and construction while portions of the buildings are occupied, all
coordinated with ongoing leasing activities and tenant fit-out work. As the
facility is also a major hub for SEPTA Regional Rail and Subway facilities,
PATCO trains, and the Greyhound Bus Station, the construction schedule will
accommodate the need for maintaining safe commuter circulation within the
project boundaries.
Construction will begin in the fourth quarter of 2016 and
is scheduled to be complete by August 2018. The architect is JPRA Architects.
Skanska's building experience in the Philadelphia/New
Jersey/Delaware region includes such projects as the Nicholas and Athena
Karabots Pavilion Addition at the Franklin Institute, University of Delaware
East Campus Residence Hall, SugarHouse Casino, Inspira Healthcare Network,
Christiana Care Health Systems Women and Children's Health Building, American
Airlines Terminal F expansion and baggage claim at Philadelphia International
