Peco has completed construction of a new $32 million
electric distribution substation in Marcus Hook to support increased demand and
future growth, including new development at the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex.
The project, which began in August 2015, includes
installation of fiber-optic current transformers and diagnostic systems that
provide a real-time analysis of the substation’s transformers, circuit
breakers, and battery systems. The "smartgrid" installation includes
thermal-imaging technology that can detect
potential issues by sensing unusual temperature variations in a piece of
equipment.
The substation transforms 220,000-volt power from
transmission lines into 13,000-volt power for distribution to larger customers
and to neighborhoods. Peco said it was part of the utility's $500 million
annual budget for infrastructure improvements and maintenance.
