Officials in Bucks County's Lower Makefield Township will
reportedly decide Wednesday night whether to spend $4 million on more than 50
acres of open land where current zoning would allow the construction of dozens
of homes.
If the township supervisors approve, about $3.8 million
will go towards 44 acres of land at 1205 Big Oak Road, not far from the Lower
Makefield-owned Five Mile Woods preserve, where an estimated 50 single-family
homes could go up if acquired by a real estate developer, according to the
Bucks County Courier Times.
The Wednesday night vote will also include a decision to
apply for nearly $270,000 of Bucks County Open Space Program funds to put
towards the purchase of 9.5 acres at Big Oak and Stony Brook roads, the
newspaper said.
The purchase
price is $460,000, and Lower Makefield would use the county funds, along with
about $190,000 of township open space funds, to buy the land. The town would maintain
it as open space, the manager said.
The Courier Times says the current owners of the 9.5
acres would still live on the remaining 1.5 acres of their property. Meanwhile
1205 Big Oak Road would also still be the current owner's property, but by buying
the land the township would prevent any development on the site.
The township supervisors are set to meet Wednesday night
for the vote.
