Rock-climbing gym part of new Fishtown apartment building

Philadelphia's design-review panel has given the nod to plans for a new mixed-use building near the Sugarhouse Casino in Fishtown with 169 apartment units and a 23,000-square-foot rock-climbing gym.

Members of the Civic Design Review board voted Tuesday to end their discussion of the project at 1100 N. Delaware Ave. Since the project's developer, Core Realty, is seeking no variances or other relief from land-use regulations, the CDR vote clears the project for the issuance of its zoning approvals.

Core's plan calls for the six-story structure with the apartments and gym to be built south of the historic Edward Corner Marine Merchandise Warehouse building near Delaware Avenue and Shackamaxon Street. The project also calls for the restoration of the Edward Corner building to accommodate 10 more residential units and ground-floor commercial space.

Included in the proposal are 25 surface parking spots and 75 below-grade spaces.
