The commonwealth's largest water utility is planning to
move its headquarters from the Hershey area to Cumberland County.
Pennsylvania American Water, which has bought several municipal water systems
on the West Shore, said today that it will build a new headquarters
on Wesley Drive in Lower Allen Township, next to an existing operations center.
The new building, which is still in the early design
phase, will replace the company's headquarters on Hersheypark Drive in Derry
Township. That facility covers 43,500 square feet on a six-acre lot. Plans are
underway to sell it.
Pennsylvania American Water
officials expect to complete construction and relocate about 80 employees to
the new headquarters in late 2018. Size and cost of the project are still
unknown, a company spokesman said.
Joseph F. McKernan Jr. Architects
& Associates, based in New Jersey, is the designer on the
project.
"This opportunity became available when the building
next door to our West Shore facility went up for sale, and we realized how many
advantages could be gained by bringing our team under one roof to improve
communications, efficiency and productivity," company president Kathy Pape
said.
The move will not impact the production, field operations
and water quality staff based at the company's G.C. Smith Water Treatment Plant
in Dauphin County. That plant supplies water to abut 19,000 East Shore
customers.
Pennsylvania American Water serves about 39,000 customers
in Cumberland and York counties. Part of publicly traded American
Water Works Co. Inc., Pennsylvania American Water provides water and
wastewater services to about 2.3 million people in the commonwealth.
