The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners approved a senior living center on part of the former Lower Macungie Elementary School property during Thursday night's meeting.

The vote was 5-0. Signature Personal Care and Memory Care will construct a one-story,that will house 80 memory and personal care units. The facility will be located at the intersection of South Krocks and Lower Macungie roads and will include associated private roadways, storm water management facilities and the extension of a bike path.

Commissioner Ronald W. Beitler voted for the resolution, but lamented what he termed was a missed opportunity.

"It's unfortunate the township didn't have a crack at this with the school district," Ronald W. Beitler said. "Had we known this property for sale the township would have strongly considered purchasing it." He added that the township would have likely been able to retain the playground there was a public amenity and also to subdivide the school building and sell separately remaining in tact.

"That being what it is, this is a good use for the township," Ronald W. Beitler said. "I'm not a big fan of this project," said Commissioner Brian Higgins. In other news, commissioners also approved a 874,800 square foot facility with 170 loading docks at 8449 Congdon Hill Dr.

The consolidated lot rests on just under 75 acres. The resolution was on one of developer David Jaindl's settlement agreement warehouses. Beitler also expressed concerns about this project that were centered around truck traffic. He wanted to prevent trucks from turning right off Congdon Hill Drive, which is a private road. It also serves as the main entrance to several warehouses off Spring Creek Road into the borough of Alburtis. In addition, he also was concerned with trucks using Mertztown and Creamery road west as shortcuts to avoid congestion on Route 222.
