Temple, nurses reach terms on a new 3-year deal

About 2,000 nurses and health care professionals at Temple University Hospital have reached an agreement on a new three-year contract with the North Philadelphia medical center.

The workers, 98 percent of whom voted to ratify the agreement Tuesday night, are members of the the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP).

PASNAP officials said the three-year contract includes wage increases and improvements on staffing and job security.

The contract, according to PASNAP, contains wage increases of 6.75 percent over three years, with a majority of employees seeing 10 percent or more between annual increases and wage steps built into the contract.

Temple University Hospital released a statement saying the new contracts will be in effect retroactively from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2019.

"Agreement on these new contracts was achieved, in large part, because of mutual commitment – on both sides of the bargaining table – to a sustained process of respectful and productive contract negotiations, which began in July," Temple said in its statement.

“The number one issue for the nurses was safe staffing," said Maureen May, a registered nurse and president of the nurses’ union at Temple. “The contract provides language that supports staffing initiatives, improves patient safety and holds management accountable to the union.”

Im 2010, PASNAP nurses at Temple University went out on strike for about a month before a new deal was reached.

PASNAP represents 8,300 nurses and health professionals throughout Pennsylvania.
