RACP at it again: uCity Square and LGBT-youth housing projects get state funding

State officials have awarded millions more in redevelopment grants for Philadelphia-area projects, including $2.5 million for an office tower as part of West Philadelphia's uCity Square development and $3 million for an affordable housing project in Kensington aimed at gay and transgendered young adults.

The awards from the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program bring the total amount granted for projects in Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery Counties to $49.5 million, according to a list posted Friday to the website of the state budget office. No RACP grants have been awarded for Chester County projects.

The list covers projects for which a final decision has been made, with further RACP awards possible in the future, according to Jeffrey Sheridan, a spokesman for Gov. Wolf.

The University City Science Center's 3675 Market Street office building on the uCity Square project site is to include 10 stories of labs, offices and ground floor retail, according to the list. Project HOME's 30-unit affordable housing project is planned for 1817 E. York St.

Also on the list is a $1 million award for the proposed SLS Lux hotel-and-condo tower on South Broad Street, less than the $20 million requested for the project by developer Carl Dranoff.

Other recipients include the Independence Visitor Center, which was granted $2 million for enhancements to its facility near Independence Hall, and Norfab Corp. which was awarded $2 million for a new textile factory in Norristown.

An earlier batch of awardees, including the developers of the Gallery at Market East renovation project, was announced late last month.
