City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell has proposed
legislation that would rezone an area west of 30th Street Station to allow the
earliest phases of the Schuylkill Yards redevelopment project planned by
Brandywine Realty Trust and Drexel University to begin.
The legislation was introduced by Blackwell, whose
district includes the development site, and referred to the council's rules
committee on Sept. 29, according to the city's website.
The bill would change the zoning of the area occupied by
the Bulletin newspaper building and its parking lot, as well as a section just
to the north across John F. Kennedy Boulevard, from industrial to high-density
commercial-mixed-use.
Brandywine and Drexel have said they hoped to begin the
Schuylkill Yards project, which is to eventually involve the development of
about eight million square feet of mixed-use real estate, with the conversion
of the Bulletin building's parking lot into a landscaped open space, followed
by the renovation of the building itself.
The development's first new construction project would be
a tower of labs and offices on the parcel to the north, the partners have said.
