Inspira Health Network has hired Skanska USA to build its
new $350 million Gloucester County hospital.
The five-story hospital building with 204 beds in
Harrison will be the fourth inpatient facility for the South Jersey health
system, which also has medical centers in Vineland, Elmer and Woodbury.
Inspira bought the land for the new hospital from Rowan
University in a $11.5 million deal that was finalized in March. The property on
Route 322 near Exit 50 of Route 55 is adjacent to land owned by the college.
The health system has not yet decided on its future plans for its other
Gloucester County medical center in Woodbury, which previously operated as
Underwood-Memorial Hospital. Inspira working with the city of Woodbury and the
Gloucester County Improvement Authority to conduct a redevelopment study, which
will identify future opportunities for the campus.
The project represents the second major hospital contract
for New York-based Skanska USA in this region during in the third quarter. In
August, the company, which has local offices in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, was
selected to build the women and children’s health center for Christiana Care
Health System in Newark, Del.
The new Inspira hospital will be Skanska USA’s largest
integrated project delivery project to date in North America. Integrated
project delivery, explained Skanska USA Executive Vice President and General
Manager Ed Szwarc, is a collaborative approach where the architect, engineer
and contractor all sign one contract instead of separate deals.
"We all share the risk and reward," Szwarc
said. "Everybody's profit comes from a single pool based on the success of
the project. Everybody has to be successful for any individual organization to
be successful."
Szwarc said the model is more commonly used on the West
Coast, and is now making its way to the East Coast.
Skanska USA is working with partners Array Architects and
engineering firm Leach Wallace Associates on the Inspira project. The project
will involve the construction of a main patient care tower with operating
rooms, an emergency department, imaging suites, as well as administrative,
dining and support services. The project also includes building a new central
utility plant, which will provide electrical power, heating/hot water and
chilled water to the new hospital.
Construction is scheduled to begin during the first
quarter of 2017 and be completed by December 2019.
“A new medical center conveniently located in the heart
of Gloucester County will be a great asset to the entire region,” said John
DiAngelo, president and CEO of Inspira.
Inspira officials said Thursday its estimate of the
project cost, originally announced as $310 million last year, is now $350
million. That price includes estimates for the as-yet undetermined renovations
at the Woodbury campus identified through the redevelopment process.
