Gov. Wolf will join Aramark officials to make a
"major announcement" Monday, sparking speculation that the global
food-services giant has decided on a new Center City headquarters location.
Wolf's office said the news conference would be held at
1:30 p.m. at Cira Green on 30th Street, which happens to have a perfect view
across the Schuylkill of 2400 Market St., a location the company has been
considering.
Aramark currently occupies about 365,000 square feet of
space in its namesake tower at 1101 Market St. With the lease there expiring in
2018, the company had been weighing the possibility of moving its headquarters
- including to another city.
Earlier this year, Philadelphia and Pennsylvania leaders
breathed a collective sigh of relief when Aramark announced it would stay in
Philadelphia.
Among the reasons, Aramark communications chief Tod
MacKenzie said, was the company's close identification with the city that has
been its home for 55 years, and a desire to avoid uprooting its staff.
Aramark has about 14,000 workers statewide, with 6,500 of
them in the Philadelphia area. Of those, about 1,150 - mostly managers and
support staff - are at 1101 Market.
Philadelphia officials offered some financial incentives
to keep the multinational food- and facilities-services firm in town, although
no one has divulged details. Besides 2400 Market St. - a building that formerly
housed the Marketplace Design Center and is known for its multistory whale mural
- Aramark has considered space at the Navy Yard.
