Coordinated Health breaks ground on $15 million medical, ambulatory surgical center

Coordinated Health is expanding in Luzerne County with the construction of a $15 million medical campus and ambulatory surgical center in Hazle Township.

Hospital network officials and state and local leaders broke ground Thursday for what will be a 42,000-square-foot building on six acres in Humboldt Station next to Humboldt Industrial Park, Route 924 and Interstate 81.

The medical campus is expected to open next spring with 50 employees, including the 30 who work at Coordinated Health’s Church Hill Mall medical center, also in Hazle Township, which opened in 2012.

Coordinated Health has not yet determined whether to close the Church Hill Mall building after the Humboldt Station campus is opened, said Florence Brown, a spokeswoman for Coordinated Health.

“We are evaluating the needs of the Hazleton market over the next several months to determine the best use of our Church Hill Mall facility,” Brown said.

“As with any business, our decisions are based on the current conditions of the market, and we will continue to monitor all aspects of our business and respond accordingly,” she said.

The Humboldt Station campus would be Coordinated Health’s 18th location.

Kevin O’Donnell, president of CAN DO Inc., a nonprofit industrial and economic development corporation serving the Greater Hazleton area, said the new Coordinated Health medical campus is a welcome addition, particularly to Humboldt Industrial Park, one of the largest industrial parks in Pennsylvania, with more than 60 companies and 10,000 employees.

The medical campus will offer an employer clinic for occupational health and workers’ compensation.

“We welcome these high-quality jobs to our area,” O’Donnell said.

Jessica Huber, regional director at Coordinated Health, said the company’s investment in Humboldt “will lead to more jobs, opportunities and economic growth.”

The new medical campus will offer primary care, orthopedics, sports medicine, joint replacements, spine care, foot and ankle care, hand and wrist care, cardiology, women’s health, specialty care, advanced imaging and rehabilitation.

Coordinated Health, headquartered in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, is a privately held, physician-owned acute care hospital network that employs 1,000 people at 17 sites in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey.
