Wyomissing-based Fox Theatres is finalizing plans for
$3.5 million in renovations to its Fox Berkshire eight-screen theater on
Berkshire Boulevard in Wyomissing.
The project includes the addition of four auditoriums
covering 10,000 square feet and adding 425 luxury recliners, a second
large-format screen for a total of four new screens, and a full kitchen and
upscale cocktail bar for serving food and beverages beyond the typical popcorn
and soda offerings.
Fox has invested more than $2.5 million in upgrades
throughout the complex since reacquiring control of the theater from Carmike
Cinemas, said Donald Fox, president of Fox Theatres.
“We saw an opportunity … so we started making
investments,” Fox said.
Last year, it received a liquor license and added a beer
and wine bar and luxury recliner seats and a large-format screen. The full
kitchen that Fox plans to add will be equipped to prepare hot food for
in-theater dining capable of serving more than 2,000 movie-goers per day.
The expanded menu will offer specialty appetizers,
gourmet pizza, grilled burgers, sandwiches, wraps and desserts.
Fox sees a renewed interest in people desiring a
different type of movie-going experience.
“Reserved seating and recliners make going to the movies
more enjoyable,” Fox said.
The expansion of the theater, built in 1994, will
increase seating capacity by 60 percent, Fox said.
“Eight screens weren’t enough to meet the demand,” Fox
said.
With 425 new seats, the theater will have a total of
1,170 seats.
The theater is obtaining approvals from Wyomissing and
other agencies. Once it receives them, the expansion should be completed by
next spring, Fox said.
