Penn’s Landing hotel’s $15M renovation includes new restaurant, meeting space

A hotel on Penn's Landing has undergone a number of changes in the past year, including last year's new ownership and a rebrand, and more is in store, including a new restaurant and more meeting spaces for the corporate client.

The Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing, formerly the Hyatt on Penn's Landing until February last year, will undergo a two-year, $15 million property-wide redesign project, some of which will be completed in time for the Democratic National Convention in July.

Once completed, the redesign will "elevate the hotel's position as a destination location for both visitors and locals alike," according to Daniel J. Keating III, the hotel's developer and owner.

Philadelphia-based design firm Floss Barber Inc. was recruited for the redesign, which will focus on a "handsome interpretation of modern craftsmanship with a nod to the hotel's desirable position along the Delaware River," according to CEO and owner Floss Barber.

The renovation will take place in three separate phases.

The first phase began this past March and included the addition of the Hilton HHonors Lounge. The focus of this phase will be to incorporate the idea of gathering spaces, according to the hotel, including transforming the hotel lobby into an an open-floor plan with "conversation areas."

The first phase is scheduled to be completed by mid-June this year.

The hotel's former restaurant, Keating's River Grill, will also be replaced with a concept called Keating's Rope & Anchor, Bar + Kitchen, which is scheduled to open in June. The menu will focus on American cuisine with an emphasis on sustainable seafood and local ingredients.

The second phase of the redesign project will begin in December this year, and it will "bring a new take on event aesthetics" to the meeting and ballroom space in the hotel, according to hotel officials.

The event space on the second and third floors will be completed in early 2017, with views "of both the evolving cityscape and the Delaware River waterfront," according to the hotel.

The hotel will have 24,000 square feet of functional space.

There are also plans of adding a new meeting space on the third floor "tailored to the distinctive needs of meeting planners," according to hotel officials.

“Our passion for creating one-of-a-kind experiences for customers is reflected in the bold new designs we have planned for our space — from the Great Room to galas — we are beyond excited to showcase our new space to Philadelphia and beyond," General Manager Bill Fitzgerald said in a statement.

The third phase of the redesign project, which will begin in early 2017, will include updates to all of the hotel's 348 guest rooms and its presidential suite. The focus will be on muted tones and natural materials.

"The sleeping rooms will combine lush textiles and soft lighting to encourage restful stays, leaving guests feeling completely refreshed and rejuvenated," according to the hotel.

The hotel's redesign is expected to be completed in early 2018.

"The redesign of our property and the addition of Keating’s Rope & Anchor, Bar + Kitchen is the next step in providing that first-class experience for our guests and opening the door to experience the waterfront for our local community for generations to come," hotel owner and developer Keating said.
