Berks energy, HVAC company building new headquarters

A Berks County energy provider is moving its West Lawn headquarters to new facilities that will be built in nearby Sinking Spring.

E.G. Smith said it has contracted with Benchmark Construction Co. of Brownstown to manage the construction of the facility that will be built on two acres at 1 Corporate Blvd. in Sinking Spring.

Michael DeBerdine III, CEO of the Rhoads Energy Family of Companies, corporate parent of E.G. Smith, explained the reasoning behind the move.

“The company has been experiencing growth for the past several years, and during that time we have been weighing our options for an upgraded facility,” DeBerdine said.

He said there are many advantages to the new site, which is about three miles from its existing headquarters.

The company will move its 30,000-gallon propane tank to the site, consolidating infrastructure and streamlining delivery to residential, commercial and agricultural customers.

DeBerdine said the new location is close to E.G. Smith’s filling source for heating oil, enabling more efficient wintertime delivery.

The expansion will enable the company to stock more equipment and better care for its vehicle fleet.

Stackhouse Bensinger Inc. of Sinking Spring performed land planning services for the project, and Providence Engineering Corp. of Lancaster handled design.

Construction is expected to begin in late May and should be complete by the fall.

E.G. Smith offers heating oil, propane, heating, ventilation and air conditioning service and other energy services to thousands of residential and commercial customers in Berks County.
