The United Steelworkers union has voted roughly 5-to-1 to approve a four-year contract with Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Technologies Inc.

PITTSBURGH — The United Steelworkers union has voted roughly 5-to-1 to approve a four-year contract with Allegheny Technologies Inc. after 2,200 workers were locked out more than six months ago.

About 90 percent of the union workers affected cast votes Tuesday.

The last contract expired June 30, and ATI locked out the workers at 12 plants in Pennsylvania and five other states on Aug. 15. About 1,500 of those locked out work at six plants in the Pittsburgh suburbs. The company is based in Pittsburgh.

The National Labor Relations Board must still approve the deal because it had filed unfair labor practice allegations against the company during the lockout. Union officials didn't expect that to scuttle the deal.

A company spokesman says workers will return once the NLRB approves the deal.
