Harrisburg-based Quandel Construction Group Inc., one of
the largest general contractors in the midstate, has been hired to build a $60
million residence hall and bookstore at Bloomsburg University in Columbia
County.
The 162,000-square-foot, seven-story building will house
about 400 students in suite-style living units designed for up to four
students. There will be an outside gathering space with fire pit, a
second-story outdoor plaza, two lounges on every floor and a green roof with
sustainable, low-maintenance plants.
The ground floor of the building will house the
University Store and two new dining venues — Chick-fil-A and
Qdoba — plus campus mail services and an integrative learning area.
Demolition of the old university bookstore, the site of
the new building, began in January, according to the university's
website.
Construction of the new
building is expected to begin in April, according to Quandel. It should be completed for occupancy in August
2017.
More than 9,000 students are enrolled at Bloomsburg
University this spring. That includes about 8,000 full-time students, according
to the university.
