The 76ers and the construction firm Intech will hold a
job fair for residents of Camden and the surrounding region on March 17,
looking for people who can help build the team's new waterfront training
facility.
The fair, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Waterfront Technology
Center, will be attended by contractors seeking carpenters, roofers, glaziers,
masons, plumbers, painters, tile setters, and more. The fair is open to those
with no experience or technical education, as well as current members of
building trades industries. Construction trade union information will be
provided to anyone interested in pre-apprenticeship programs, according to
76ers representatives. "We hope this job fair will continue to demonstrate
our belief that Camden is a city on the rise," said Lara Price, the
Sixers' executive vice president of business operations. "We are committed
to supporting and enriching the lives of Camden-area youth and residents
through opportunities such as this job fair."
The Sixers were promised $82 million in tax credits from
the state Economic Development Authority in June 2014 in exchange for building
in Camden. The team had considered locating the project in the Navy Yard, but
CEO Scott O'Neil said at the time that the incentives awarded as part of the
Economic Opportunity Act made all the difference.
