PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Drexel University officials have
announced details pertaining to the Philadelphia school's massive 20-year
development plan to expand its reach into the city's University City
neighborhood.
The university has teamed with developer Brandywine
Realty Trust to create a 14-acre, master-planned community. Dubbed
"Schuylkill Yards," the community will consist of entrepreneurial
space, educational and research facilities, offices, residential and retail
space and more.
President John Fry says he set out to expand Drexel's
campus in a "broader context."
Initial phases of the project call for the development of
mixed-use real estate on a 10-acre lot next to Drexel's campus and adjacent
from Amtrak's 30th Street Station.
The partnership between Drexel and Brandywine gives the
developer a long-term lease for the property while allowing the school first
rights to space in Schuylkill Yards.
