East Pennsboro Township-based Holy Spirit – A Geisinger
Affiliate plans to convert its emergency department into a Level II trauma
center.
The plans call for a two-story addition to the John R.
Dietz Emergency Center, as well as a rooftop helipad.
The project will expand the number of treatment rooms in
the emergency department and add a secure, behavioral health treatment area.
The township approved the plans as of yesterday,
according to Holy Spirit- A Geisinger Affiliate spokeswoman Lori Moran.
A Level II trauma center must see 350 major trauma
patients per year, according to the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.
There are about a dozen such centers in the state.
Lancaster General Health is the only other Level II
trauma center in the midstate. Derry Township-based Penn State Milton S.
Hershey Medical Center and WellSpan Health's York Hospital are Level I trauma
centers.
Level II trauma centers are one step down from Level I,
which must meet additional requirements, including research performance,
surgical residency programs and an annual volume of 600 major trauma patients.
According to Kyle Snyder, Holy Spirit’s vice president of
operations, Holy Spirit will be transformed into a Level II trauma center by
October 2016.
“It will save critical minutes for area patients
suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries,” Snyder said.
