Saxbys plans major renovation for 30th Street Station café

Saxbys will be giving one of its oldest cafés a major facelift.

The Philadelphia-based company in November last year reopened its University City café at 40th and Locust streets. It bought the location from franchisees and overhauled it – the major renovations gave the space a whole new look.

Saxbys will be closing its 30th Street Station outpost on Jan. 18 with plans of giving it a renovation on the scale of the University City café. (See rendering.)

The updated kiosk will have the same footprint as the current kiosk, but — like the Penn café — will be "unrecognizable" to current guests when it reopens.

The updated space will have be a very open and modern design compared to the current space.
The café is expected to open in several weeks as the company wants to ensure it is back up and running well ahead of Democratic National Convention in July.

The cost of the renovation was not disclosed. Eimer Design is the architectural firm behind the new 30th Street Station design.

Saxbys also plans to open a location at SugarHouse Casino as part of the casino's upcoming food-and-beverage area called the Marketplace on the expanded casino floor. It will join other Philadelphia favorites like Geno's Steaks.
