For seven straight years, residential building permits in
the Harrisburg area have totaled less than 2,000 per year, according to the
latest building activity report from the Tri-County Regional Planning
Commission.
There were 1,491 residential permits issued last
year in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.
This “new normal” period following the last recession
also has led to greater nonresidential activity in urban communities, according
to the commission.
Carlisle, Mechanicsburg and Hummelstown were among the
top municipalities last year in Cumberland and Dauphin counties for new
commercial establishments, according to the report.
The last time Dauphin County’s annual residential building
permit total exceeded permits in Cumberland County was 1997.
There were 1,470 in Dauphin County and 1,392 in
Cumberland County that year, according to the Tri-County Regional Planning
Commission.
