Montgomery County Community College is moving forward
with plans to bring student housing to its Pottstown campus.
The college has been exploring the idea for about two
years and found a significant demand for student housing at both the central
campus in Blue Bell and the west campus in Pottstown.
The west campus, which is anchoring a revitalization of
downtown Pottstown and which occupies walkable riverfront real estate, was the
obvious place to start, college vice president Steady Moono said.
"Just think about it, these students, they live in
Pottstown. They study in Pottstown. They play in Pottstown," he said.
"The benefits would be immense to the community."
Last week, the college board of trustees approved an
exclusive development agreement with Cross Properties Inc. Over the next few
months, Cross will be in contact with local officials and will develop a
proposal for where and how the housing might be built.
Moono said the college aimed to incur "minimal
risk" financially, as the goal "is not about revenue. It's about
access."
