Welcome
to the May, 2015 Gregory Management & Consulting Services (GMCS)
REGIONAL CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY UPDATE.
GMCS continues to expand our products and services to meet
the needs of our industry and expanding client base. Most recently, our monthly newsletter service
has transitioned to a fee based product serving the needs of associations and
organizations interested in receiving our comprehensive and informative
industry specific monthly newsletter.
While we do not plan on ceasing the publication of our very popular
complimentary monthly newsletter, we do plan on reducing it in size and scope
while transitioning to a new and enhanced delivery platform highlighting key
industry data and relevant topics backed by sponsored content. May, 2015 marks
the beginning of that transition with a greatly condensed newsletter
highlighting the top ten posts to our corporate blog in the previous
month. Remember, our corporate blog at
gregorymcs.blogspot.com contains hundreds of posts from the previous month and
archives from the past all categorized by popular grouping. GMCS
is currently seeking industry sponsors interested in participating in this
unique opportunity to place their business in front of thousands of industry
specific readers every month. As has
always been the case, every article, in both our fee based and complimentary
products, is posted by category on our corporate blog at gregorymcs.blogspot.com.
GMCS is focused on facilitating communication and collaboration
amongst our construction employer associations, constructors, facility owners,
building trades and governmental bodies with an emphasis on creating a centralized,
focused community that actively promotes labor harmony, industry advancement,
contractor opportunities and workforce development.

Job categories where union membership has fallen off most:
For
nearly all of the past three decades, Americans have looked somewhat more
favorably upon labor unions than unfavorably, according to Pew Research Center
polling. In a new survey, for instance, nearly half of Americans (48%) held
favorable views of unions, versus 39% who had unfavorable views. But those
fairly benign views come as union membership continues to plummet, with certain
job categories hit particularly hard.

Property to construct new building at Navy Yard:
WuXi
AppTec Inc. is expanding into a third building at the Philadelphia Navy Yard
and will occupy a 145,000-square-foot structure that Liberty Property Trust is
scheduled to break ground tomorrow.
The
building has a lot of significance for WuXi AppTec and the Navy Yard. WuXi
AppTec was Liberty's (NYSE: LPT) first tenant at the Navy Yard in South
Philadelphia. In 2003, the Malvern, Pa., real estate investment trust construct
a 130,000-square-foot building for the company.

Davis Cos. of Boston and Hayden Maguire Real Estate Fund of West Conshohocken,
Pa., have drawn up preliminary plans for a five-story, 240,000-square-foot
office building on a 10-acre parcel at the corner of Swedesford Road and Old

The NLRB Invites Briefs on Nonmember Fees for Grievance
Processing:
WASHINGTON,
DC-- The Board invites the filing of briefs in order to allow parties and
interested amici the opportunity to address issues raised in United Steel,
Paper and Forestry Rubber,
Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International
Union, Local 1192 (Buckeye Florida) (12-CB-109654).
The Value Of Apprenticeships In The Construction Industry:
According
to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), 80% of construction
firms are planning to hire more workers in 2015 with only 7% expected to reduce
headcounts. This could be challenging since AGC also reported that 87% of
companies have reported having difficulties filling positions, especially
skilled craft workers. Expect to see a big push for funding apprenticeship
programs to entice more workers to the construction industry. Construction
companies would be smart to either team up with local community colleges to
host programs or start programs of their own.
Corporate pensions plans bleeding through falling
interest rates:
Falling
interest rates and increased liabilities from updated mortality assumptions
combined in 2014 to eradicate most of the gains from the previous year, Towers
Watson found.
The
average funded status of the Towers Watson Pension 100 fell from 89% to 81% in
2014, even though plan assets gained in value. One bright note was that plan
sponsors who use liability-driven investment strategies had good results in
2014, the company said.
