Get
ready for huge changes at Philadelphia International Airport that include a
longer runway, interior renovations and a people-mover to speed passenger
access between terminals, 6ABC reports.
PHL will undergo a multibillion-dollar
expansion project that will become reality Wednesday when officials
are scheduled to sign paperwork resolving lawsuits over the Capacity
Enhancement Program (CEP).
Philadelphia,
Tinicum Township, and Interboro School District all had to come to terms over
tax issues and land rights.
The
project will take at least 12 years, and other phases are still in the works.
The
City of Philadelphia and Airport officials reached an agreement last May
with officials from Tinicum Township, Delaware County and the Interboro School
District on expanding the airport.
In
2011, the Federal Aviation Administration’s approved a $5.2 billion
airport-expansion plan, but neighboring Tinicum Township has opposed the plan,
which would have called for paving over 80 acres of wetlands, relocating
residents of 72 homes, and displacing 80 businesses.
