A measure the New Jersey Senate passed earlier this week
that would provide unemployment benefits to striking workers is now awaiting
action in the Assembly.
Assembly Speaker Vinnie Prieto says he plans to post the
bill for a vote in the near future. He says strikers should not have to go for
weeks without getting any compensation.
"You should be able to voice your concerns to make a
livable wage and good working environment and benefits and not be held hostage
that you cannot put food on your table."
Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick says Republican
lawmakers oppose the legislation
"It provides an avenue in my judgment that would
almost encourage strikes because you're going to be paid by the taxpayers. If
they want to create a strike fund, that fine, and if they want to negotiate
being paid after the strike is over with the employer, that's fine, but not on
the backs of the taxpayers."
The measure would provide unemployment benefits to
employees who've been out of work for more than 30 days during a labor dispute.
