Thousands of Atlantic City casino workers have reached an
agreement with three of the five casinos it planned a strike against before the
Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Unite Here Local 54 members earlier this month voted to
authorize a strike against five A.C. casinos that would begin July 1.
The union's strike would have impacted Bally’s Atlantic
City Hotel and Casino, Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City
Hotel and Casino and the Tropicana Casino. The union previously authorized a
strike against the Trump Taj Mahal.
The casino workers on Thursday, however, have reached a
deal with three Caesars Entertainment-owned casinos: Bally's, Caesars and
Harrahs, reports The Associated Press, which said "talks remain
underway" for the other two, Carl Icahn-owned properties.
A strike against the two casinos could still happen as
scheduled if a new deal isn't reached, AP reports. Terms of the contract were
not immediately disclosed.
If the strike occurs, it would be the first time in at
least 12 years casino workers walked off the job, according to The Wall Street
Journal.
Unite Here leaders often cite the members' willingness to
make sacrifices in the recent past when the gambling industry was being contracted
in the Shore resort town.
Following the closures of several casinos, the industry
has started to rebound in A.C. and the union says it is time for the casinos to
make up for the concessions its members previously made.
