Nurses at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children voted
311-to-49 to join the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied
Professionals.
The nearly 500 nurses at the North Philadelphia pediatric
hospital join the nursing staffs at two other Philadelphia-area medical centers
that have voted to form a union in the past two months.
The 850 nurses at Hahnemann University Hospital in Center
City and the 350 nurses at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill
became members of PASNAP last month.
"It's inspiring to see so many dedicated nurses
standing up for themselves and their patients," said Bill Cruice, PASNAP's
executive director.
St. Christopher's, like Hahnemann, is owned by
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. (NYSE:THC), a publicly traded hospital
management company. Delaware County Memorial is part of Crozer-Keystone Health
System, which is in the process of being sold to Prospect Medical Holdings of
Los Angeles.
In a statement, officials at St. Christopher's said:
" We respect this decision by our nurses, and in the coming days, we will
begin working with PASNAP leadership to reach a mutually beneficial collective
bargaining agreement. As we move through this process our focus remains, as it
always has been, to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to those we
serve."
