Housekeeping staff at LVH join union

Employees who provide housekeeping services at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest have joined the Teamsters union.

By a 129-71 vote, the workers have become part of Allentown-based Teamsters Local 773, union trustee Brian Taylor said Friday. He said they work for Crothall Healthcare of Wayne, Delaware County, and are contracted by Lehigh Valley Hospital Health Network.

Taylor said issues that led the workers to seek union representation include wages and working conditions. He said a starting worker earns $7.90 an hour, with the highest wage slightly more than $13 an hour after about 20 years on the job.

A hospital network spokesman was unavailable for comment Friday evening.

The 233 employees clean rooms and prepare hospital beds, among other duties, Taylor said. Local 773 also represents 156 employees at Hospital Central Services in Allentown.
