About 39,000 Verizon workers are on strike after
last-ditch talks between the company and unions failed Tuesday night.
The employees from Verizon Communication Inc.'s landline
division walked off the job at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Workers and union officials set up pickets at Verizon's
building at Ninth and Race streets in Chinatown ahead of an 8 a.m. rally.
The strike involves Communications Workers of America and
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers members from New England to
West Virginia, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The striking union members, who have been working without
a contract since August, also handle fiber-optic cable installation, sales and
service.
The workers last went on strike in 2011, when they walked
off the job for 10 days.
