The new leader of Lehigh University in Bethlehem unveiled
plans for a $250 million investment into the campus to bolster its
comprehensive plan, modernize its infrastructure and upgrade its research
facilities.
President John Simon made the announcement during his
installation as the university’s 14th president. He said the investment will
focus on the areas of financial aid, teaching, global learning and research and
student life.
The university will use the funds to bolster Lehigh’s aid
packages, globalize Lehigh’s campus by including more education about world
topics, reimagine the University Center and upgrade the university’s aging
physical plant, focusing on its laboratory and technical infrastructure.
“We need to be bold, take risks, push and define
frontiers of knowledge, create and embrace new forms of pedagogy for engaging
our students in learning and research,” Simon said in a statement. “We must
modernize our infrastructure and research facilities so they do not hold back
the creativity and innovation of our faculty and students.”
A Lehigh spokeswoman said no additional details could be
provided, saying that the investment will support the university’s strategic
plan and campus master plan.
Lehigh’s 2012 campus master plan proposes ways in which
the facilities and grounds of the campus can best accommodate the needs of an
expanding faculty and the growth in research.
