South Jersey terminals get $5 million for rail upgrades

The South Jersey Port Corp. has been awarded a $5 million grant by the N.J. Transportation Department to upgrade railroad facilities at the Camden and Paulsboro marine terminals on the Delaware River, state officials announced Tuesday.

The Rail Freight Assistance Program also approved a $672,840 grant for the Salem County Shortline Railroad to remove old rail and rail ties, level the rail bed, and bring the 18-mile track up to freight standards between the Swedesboro interconnection with Conrail and the Port of Salem, officials said.

The $5 million to South Jersey Port Corp. will be spent to extend railroad tracks to a wharf planned to be built at the Paulsboro terminal in Gloucester County, fund two new grade crossings, expand railroad tracks through the Paulsboro facility, and renovate four railroad crossings at the Balzano Terminal in Camden.

"Rail is an integral part of the Paulsboro port that will bring more tenants, more jobs and more economic activity," State Senate president Steve Sweeney said. "The state's transportation infrastructure is key to immediate and long-term economic growth and freight rails will continue to play a key role."
