SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Teachers in the northeastern
Pennsylvania city of Scranton have notified district officials that they plan
to go on strike.
The Scranton Times-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1KqbmkJ
) a negotiation session is scheduled Tuesday to try to prevent the strike at
the end of the Sept. 25 school day.
Scranton Federation of Teachers president Rosemary Boland
says she's willing to negotiate "around the clock" on a new contract
so the students don't have to miss school.
The Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board denied the
district's request to have an arbitrator make contract recommendations earlier
this week.
The decision negated an injunction that halted a strike
planned for the first day of school. Teachers have been working under their
previous contract, which expired Aug. 31.
Superintendent Alexis Kirijan says both sides want a
favorable settlement.
