BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - A labor dispute over compensation
with the musicians' union has led the Binghamton Philharmonic to cancel a
September concert.
The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports (http://press.sn/1KAqb4m
) the dispute is over a proposed reduction in mileage allowances, which help to
draw musicians from New York City and the surrounding tri-state area.
The Philharmonic had intended its Sept. 26 opening
concert to be a significant moment for its upcoming season, with the classical
series returning to downtown Binghamton for a program at the Forum.
If the terms of the previous contract are maintained, the
Binghamton Philharmonic projects it would pay $67,600 in mileage alone for the
2015-16 season. That represents 10 percent of its overall budget.
Other concerts later in the season are under threat if a
new contract can't be reached.
