Moravian College plans to construct health sciences building

The growing interest among students seeking careers in health sciences is leading Moravian College in Bethlehem to build a site on campus to host new programs.

Plans are in place to build a three-story, 48,000-square-foot structure at 1107 Main St., said Mark Reed, vice president for finance and administration for Moravian College.

“There are currently three residential properties on that tract of land,” Reed said. “Those will ultimately be demolished.”

Moravian College owns the properties slated for demolition.

Construction could start next spring, with the building occupied by autumn 2017, he said.

The building would accommodate the nursing program, which is expected to grow, and a program for athletic training, which is a new graduate school major, in addition to a health science program.

“We do not have a budget yet; we expect to have our final number in the spring,” Reed said. “We are not sure what the cost will be.”

Moravian College will go through all the approval processes required by the city, Reed said.

The architect for the project is Earl Swensson Associates, based in Nashville, Texas.
