Commercial construction bids: 2014 was a mixed bag for Central Pa.



Last year produced mixed results for commercial construction bidding in Central Pennsylvania compared to 2013, according to the latest regional data from Chicago-based project data firm BidClerk.


Harrisburg-Carlisle, Lancaster and Lebanon counties saw declines from 2013, while York-Hanover posted a gain in projects released for bid.

  • Harrisburg-Carlisle: 343 projects totaling $920 million in 2014; 458 projects totaling $3 billion in 2013. Notable 2014 project: $22 million renovation and expansion of Halifax Area School District's middle and high school complex.
  • Lancaster County: 175 projects totaling $248.3 million in 2014; 250 projects totaling $375 million in 2013. Notable 2014 project: $10 million distribution center for Quality Bicycle Products.
  • Lebanon County: 87 projects totaling $126 million in 2014; 119 projects totaling $146.6 million in 2013. Notable 2014 project: $31.9 million aircraft maintenance instructional building at Fort Indiantown Gap.
  • York-Hanover: 200 projects totaling $426.6 million in 2014; 161 projects totaling $109 million in 2013. Notable 2014 project: $23 million renovation and expansion of West York Area School District's high school.

Overall, Pennsylvania’s major metro regions saw more than 5,900 construction projects released for bid in 2014, with a total contract value of more than $16 billion.

The latter was up from $14 billion in 2013, according to BidClerk.

For the Philadelphia area, more than 3,300 projects were released for bid, totaling $5.7 billion, according to BidClerk. In Pittsburgh, more than 1,400 projects were put out for bid, with a total value of more than $3 billion.

Nationally, BidClerk reported on 162,000 commercial construction projects valued at $455 billion. The value grew by more than $175 billion from 2013.
