New Jersey is investing big dollars into Camden — now it
wants to be sure that potential workers have the skills employers want.
The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce
Development has announced that it's giving $500,000 to Camden for workforce
development training programs.
It's a direct correlation to the state's recent
investments in the distressed city. New Jersey helped the Philadelphia 76ers
secure $82 million in tax breaks to build a practice facility and corporate
headquarters. It gave $260 million in tax breaks to Holtec International to
build a manufacturing facility. The state also provided $107 million in
assistance to Lockheed Martin to relocate employees from Moorestown, N.J. to
Camden.
It's no secret that the state is hoping that those
companies hire Camden residents, but that will only happen if they have the
skills companies need.
Training funds will be made available through an open,
competitive process and will assist with incumbent worker training,
pre-employment training and pre-apprenticeship programs, according to the New
Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
An Opportunity4Jersey grant designed to help build a
pipeline of prospective employees for area businesses, will provide a $10,000
grant to train 20 dislocated workers in three sectors: manufacturing,
transportation and retail, hospitality and tourism.
The Labor Department is releasing a Notice of Grant
Opportunity in the amount of $150,000 to fund a pre-apprenticeship program to
prepare women and minorities in the building trades.
