Alexander Building Construction completes ingot facility addition in Steelton

Alexander Building Construction Co. of Harrisburg has completed a one-year project to expand the ingot facility at ArcelorMittal's Steelton plant.

Growing demand for high-strength, high-tolerance products necessitated the addition, officials said in a news release.

The 18,000 square-foot, 100-foot high addition comprises a structural steel frame supported by 212 concrete-filled steel pipe micro-piles. It is designed to accommodate a 1-million-pound overhead crane load, officials said. It is operated in partnership with Lehigh Heavy Forge.

The project also included demolishing an adjacent building, building a 250-foot retaining wall, relocating utilities, constructing a new employee building and furnishing a repair crane.

To keep rail lines around the facility in operation during the project and ensure minimal disruption, Alexander constructed the addition in phases, relocating existing track and installing new track where needed.

An Alexander spokesman declined to comment on the project’s cost.

“We are excited to now enjoy the results of nearly six years of planning, preparation and construction,” said Steve Taylor, general manager of the ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant.

“Alexander’s project team excelled in managing all phases of the project, from design to final completion. They coordinated with our steelmaking operation throughout the project, resulting in a safe, high-quality project that meets our future production needs.”

Rick Seitz, president of Alexander Building Construction Co., said, “We are proud to be a key part of this important project for ArcelorMittal Steelton. The project was challenging, but our project team worked closely with the AMS team to overcome all challenges and deliver a high-quality and safe project that will benefit ArcelorMittal for decades to come.”

Alexander is part of the Allentown-based Butz Family of Companies, a construction firm with projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Delaware.
