The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is
developing plans to build a new data center in the field south of the Life Lion
helicopter rescue center.
Hospital personnel came to Derry Township supervisors
Monday night seeking approval for their plans, which would add 64,554 feet to
the medical center campus.
Plans also include filling in a portion of the hospital's
healing garden and courtyard to provide more room for the emergency department
and the heart and vascular institute, according to medical center facilities
director Marvin Smith.
Smith said the hospital is running out of space for its
computer servers, electronic data and research records at its Sipe Avenue
facility. He said some offices will remain at the former data building.
Corey Bray of Gannett Fleming, engineer for the project,
said the new data center should not add significantly to traffic.
Supervisors said they wanted more time to review the
plans, since it was a large project. They will vote at their Jan. 27 meeting.
