Derry Township supervisors approved plans for a new data
center for Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at their Tuesday
meeting.
Supervisors had discussed the plans at an earlier
meeting, but said at the time they wanted to review them more before voting.
The new data center will replace the Sipe Avenue facility
and will be built in the field south of the Life Lion helicopter rescue center.
The new center would add 64,554 feet to the medical
center campus.
Plans also include filling in a portion of the hospital's
healing garden and courtyard to provide more room for the emergency department
and the heart and vascular institute.
The hospital is running out of space for its computer
servers, electronic data and research records at the Sipe Avenue facility. Some
offices will remain at the former data building.
At Tuesday's meeting, supervisors also complemented
medical center officials for all the center has done to improve traffic in the
area.
Supervisor Justin Engle said the hospital has already
spent nearly $800,000 in traffic improvements and has committed to another
$250,000.
