HAVERFORD Haverford College graduates unable to meet
their student loan debt may soon get some help through a new fund being
established with donor dollars.
The new $2 million fund will help young alumni who are
unemployed, in low-paying jobs with "high social value," or who do
not have access to other loan deferral programs, the college said.
The money for the Haverford Student Loan Debt Relief fund
comes from the Jaharis Family Foundation Inc., and is part of a $10 million
gift to the college, announced Thursday evening.
The remaining $8 million will go toward a new music
center in renovated Roberts Hall, including an addition housing a recital hall.
The creation of the debt relief fund follows the
college's decision to re-introduce loans for some students as part of their
financial aid package. The college previously had given only grants.
Haverford, a highly selective college of 1,200 students
on the Main Line, is one of the most expensive colleges in the area, with
tuition, fees and room and board of $61,784 a year.
"Easing the burden of student debt will enable
Haverford alumni to do more, for more people, in more ways," said Steven
M. Jaharis, a 1982 Haverford graduate and a primary care physician in Chicago.
