Morgans Hotel Group Co. of New York plans to construct a
$125 million hotel in Center City.
The company is proposing to build a 300-room hotel at
17th and Chancellor streets (between Walnut and Locust Streets) where a parking
garage now stands. Little Pete's diner, a floral shop and nail salon are within
the garage space. The plan calls for tearing down the garage and replacing it
with two stories of retail.
The structure was designed by DAS Architects Inc. of
Philadelphia and Clemens Construction Co. has been retained to oversee its
development.
The hotel will operate under Morgans' Hudson brand, which
the company describes as spirited, youthful and catering to an urban
experience. It operates a Hudson hotel in New York and has plans to open
another one next year in London.
Morgans Hotel Group was originally founded by Ian
Schrager of Studio 54 fame but later sold. It focuses on boutique hotels.
The Philadelphia hotel will have a penthouse floor with a
restaurant as well as two floors of retail space, rooms for special events and
meeting facilities.
Construction of the Hudson in Philadelphia is expected to
begin next year and be completed by 2016
