MIDDLETOWN TWP. Construction on the former Franklin Mint
property could begin as soon as 2016, according to a real estate agent hired to
market the development project in Middletown Township.
Development of the more than 170-acre property along
Baltimore Pike has been delayed for years due to opposition from residents, a
slow economy, and a legal battle among the developers.
The development group gained zoning approval in February
to build townhouses, offices, retail space, and a hotel. Zommick McMahon
Commercial Real Estate announced last week that it will seek tenants for the
development, which will be named Middletown Commons.
The site has been mostly vacant since the Franklin Mint,
a coin and collectibles manufacturer, closed in 2004. "We've already
received initial interest from grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, and several
financial institutions," Zommick McMahon Vice President Matt DiGiulio said
in a statement.
