Abington Health and Jefferson Health System are exploring
a strategic partnership. Abington Health Board of Trustee's has approved an
"exclusive period of focused, intensive study" with the organization.
"Over the next 30 days, in conjunction with our key
physician leaders and our executive team, we will be evaluating a unique model
with one of the potential partners, Jefferson," said Laurence M. Merlis,
president and CEO of Abington Health in a statement. The organization said it
would not comment further.
It hasn't been an easy road for the Montgomery County
health system. In June, Abington Health announced plans to lay off 95 workers
as it struggles to cope with declining inpatient-care volumes and decreasing
reimbursement rates from health insurers. It also reduced hours for other
employees.
Jefferson, meanwhile, laid out a bold plan in April to
unite Thomas Jefferson University, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals and
its 800 employed physicians under a single entity based in Center City.

Abington Health
is exploring options for aligning with another major health system through a
strategic partnership that will ensure Abington will thrive in the future as we
care for our patients in the rapidly evolving healthcare environment.
In order to
fully understand our options, the Abington Health Board of Trustees has
approved an exclusive period of focused, intensive study with one organization.
Over the next 30 days, in conjunction with our key physician leaders and our
executive team, we will be evaluating a unique model with one of the potential
partners, Jefferson. Input from key constituencies--especially our physician
leaders-- will be critical to the process and assist the Abington Health Board
of Trustees with decision making.
Our system’s
reputation for safety and quality, our leadership position in the suburban
healthcare community and our long-standing history of excellent patient care
place us in a strong position to chart a course through this time of change.
We have reached
no conclusions, but are excited about the opportunities for Abington and the
communities we serve.
