Aldi's prepares City Line market

In an Aug. 29 note to members, the Overbrook Park Civic Association reports that Aldi, the discount grocery chain, "has purchased Center Lanes bowling alley," and plan to demolish it and build a new store "from the ground up," opening as soon as this winter. Good news, says resident Bruce H. Klauber: "Aldi owns the property and everyone wants a market here."

City Ave. near Overbrook Park isn't what it used to be -- the Sears Hardware outlet shut last year, before the bowling alley --  and Klauber, a columnist at Icon Magazine, sees this as a sign better stores are coming: "You know about the revitalization of the nearby 69th St. shopping district. It's starting to happen in Overbrook Park," he tells me.

For neighbors who prefer a more full-service grocery, there's still the ShopRite on Haverford Ave. in nearby Morris Park.
