ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - With Atlantic City's casino
market struggling, the allure of a casino in the northern New Jersey
Meadowlands just outside New York City is becoming stronger to some.
At a regional gambling conference Tuesday in Atlantic
City, Assemblyman Ralph Caputo said a Meadowlands casino is the way to
recapture gambling money the state is currently losing.
And an economics professor said the shrinking Atlantic
City casino market needs to keep "right-sizing," the sooner the
better.
Caputo says a higher tax rate, with revenue to be shared
with Atlantic City, would help the resort.
But Sen. Jeff Van Drew says the state made a commitment
to keep casinos only in Atlantic City to help the region.
Gov. Chris Christie says Atlantic City needs more time
before he'll consider a Meadowlands casino.
